Bad news for the Marlins after the Draft lottery

This isn't a good day for the Miami Marlins at this point. The Washington Nationals have won the MLB Draft lottery. This is certainly not good news for The Fish, as the Winter Meetings are underway. At least the team's division has gotten worse. This is positive news for Peter Bendix and the rest of the team, but now we have the Draft lottery disaster.

The Miami Marlins had a pretty bad Draft lottery.

The Draft lottery was implemented in the last Collective Bargaining Agreement in order to stop teams from "tanking". It makes sense, teams should be encouraged to spend money and try to win annually. It's frustrating to see a team purposely lose in order to get the first pick in the Draft. It worked very well for the Houston Astros, who built a dynasty. Houston won the World Series in 2017 and 2022. They also won pennants in 2019 and 2021. It's definitely questionable if they could've built that dynasty had they not tanked.

After the disaster that was the 2024 season, the Miami Marlins really needed a top pick in the Draft. That won't happen, The Fish are instead picking seventh. Of all teams, it was the Washington Nationals who won the first pick of the Draft. There's little more frustrating than that, as they were a better team in the 2024 season. They definitely should not have won it, if we're being fair.

The Seattle Mariners are actually picking ahead of The Fish as well, despite the fact that they were leading the American League West division for most of the season. How is this fair at all? It's clear that there should be some type of correction for this. Perhaps only the teams that finish with the worst records can compete for the top pick? It's not fair to have teams that barely missed the playoffs in the mix.

The Draft lottery has shown us that the system is broken, and that Rob Manfred needs to focus on the real issues, not suggest the "Golden AB" nonsense. What a day for the Miami Marlins.
