The Miami Marlins made an obvious trade last season, moving on from closer Tanner Scott to bring in prospects in return. That was one of the last few times that the team made a meaningful trade in recent memory however, as other wise it's been minor moves left and right. In the meantime, Scott is now headed for a major role with his new team: the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Former Miami Marlins closer is now closing for the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Tanner Scott had an interesting career for the Miami Marlins. He debuted with the team in the 2022 season. That season, he pitched to a 4.31 ERA/3.67 FIP, with 12.9 K/9 and 6.6 BB/9, in 67 games and 62.2 innings pitched. It wasn't an impressive performance and he was only worth 0.1 WAR for it. In the 2023 season, Scott followed that up with an amazing 2.31 ERA/2.17 FIP, with 12.0 K/9 and 2.8 BB/9 in 74 games and 78.0 innings pitched. He also accumulated 12 saves and was worth an amazing 3.6 WAR.
Based on WAR, Tanner Scott was the best closer in the Major Leagues in the 2023 season. He was clearly impressive enough for the Los Angeles Dodgers to almost certainly take notice of him that season. The 2024 season saw him split it between The Fish and the San Diego Padres, who he was flipped to at the Trade Deadline. Between the two teams, he pitched to a 1.75 ERA/2.92 FIP, with 10.5 K/9 and 4.5 BB/9 in 72 games and 72.0 innings pitched. He also accumulated 22 saves.
Tanner Scott has always had an issue with control, which could be a potential red flag going forward. That said, he also has elite strikeout stuff and certainly looks like a dominant bullpen arm going forward. The Miami Marlins weren't going to be able to extend him, but the Los Angeles Dodgers smartly signed him away from their rivals the San Diego Padres. They also smartly inserted him into a closing role, where he might just dominate for them. It's a shame that Peter Bendix isn't allowed to spend.
