Former Miami Marlins player just had a surgery
It was great news for all of us Miami Marlins fans, when the team released OF Avisail Garcia earlier this season. Easily one of the worst signings in team history, the worst signing of the Kim Ng era was finally released by Peter Bendix. The Fish are still sadly on the hook for the $12 million that he's owed in the 2025 season.
Former Miami Marlins OF Avisail Garcia just had surgery.
OF Avisail Garcia was a complete disaster for the Miami Marlins. The defensively challenged player batted a dreadful .218/.260/.322 for the team from 2022 to 2024. He did it all in 153 games and 515 AB. He also just had 13 home runs and 49 RBI. It was as bad as it gets and it's no wonder that Bendix wanted him off the team as soon as possible.
I'm actually very surprised that Kim Ng thought that he'd be a good signing in the first place. He was incredibly inconsistent and unreliable, and had a .270/.325/.431 career batting line when he entered free agency prior to the 2022 season. It's true that it wasn't a terrible batting line, and that he had some good seasons along the way. For example, he had a pretty strong platform season with the Milwaukee Brewers. In that season, he batted .262/.330/.490, with 29 home runs and 86 RBI in 135 games and 461 AB.
Perhaps Kim thought that since he had a pair of 20 home run seasons in his last two full ones (with the 2020 season in-between), that he could carry that over to the Marlins. That of course didn't play out that way. Anyway, he just had major surgery. He had a fracture and a disc problem in his lower back, which necessitated the aforementioned surgery. I'm not sure how badly it affected his performance, but he will presumably attempt a comeback of some kind next season.
The 33 year old Avisail Garcia will turn 34 years old next June and is only owed the league minimum by a potential new signing team. We'll see if anyone takes a chance on him.
