Interesting former Marlins player is available in free agency
Catching can definitely be seen as an area of need for the Miami Marlins. This is despite the fact that current catcher Nick Fortes may have turned his entire career around. It's interesting that a former catcher is now available in free agency. Does it make any sense to pursue a reunion? Could a second run on the team produce better results for Jacob Stallings?
Former Miami Marlins catcher Jacob Stallings is available yet again.
Do the Miami Marlins actually need an upgrade at catcher? Despite his second half success, Fortes did still bat .227/.259/.318 in 110 games and 308 AB this past season. He had 4 home runs and 29 RBI and was worth just 0.0 WAR. Looking at those numbers, it's easy to see why looking for an upgrade might in fact be the way to go.
Jacob Stallings of course played for the Miami Marlins before. He played for the team from 2022-2023. In 2022, he batted .223/.292/.292, with 4 home runs and 34 RBI in 114 games and 346 AB. He was worth a terrible -0.8 WAR. In the following season in 2023, he batted .191/.278/.286, with 3 home runs and 20 RBI in 88 games and 241 AB. He was worth -0.6 WAR. This meant that his time with The Fish was largely a disappointment.
In total over the 2022 and 2023 seasons with The Fish, Stallings batted .210/.287/.290 in 202 games and 587 AB. He had an abysmal 7 home runs and 54 RBI, being worth just -1.4 WAR. It's not a surprise that he was gone from the team after the season.
Things went differently for Jacob Stallings with the Colorado Rockies. This past season, he batted .263/.357/.453, with 9 home runs and 36 RBI in 82 games and 243 AB. He was worth 1.7 WAR. Should the Miami Marlins consider bringing the 34 year old back after he declined his half of a mutual option with Colorado? Probably not based on his track record, but it's at least something to strongly consider in this case. Maybe he figured something out...
