Peter Bendix knows what he's doing, well apparently not always, but certainly in the case of the team's new CF Derek Hill. He did something remarkable in last night's disappointing loss to the New York Mets. Now we're left wondering just how much more gems Hill has to offer for the Miami Marlins?! He cetainly looks like a god acquisition so far!
Miami Marlins CF Derek Hill looks very promising so far.
The Miami Marlins needed a CF before the season started, and Derek Hill certainly wasn't on most people's lists as the answer to the problem. He proved that he was indeed the solution however. Last season, he batted .235/.259/.402, with 4 home runs and 18 RBI in 32 games and 107 AB.
So far this season, he's batting .269/.345/.462, with a home run and 3 RBI in 7 games and 26 AB. If he keeps this up, he might just have the best season of his career. Keep in mind that he was the 23'rd pick of the 2014 draft and used to be a top prospect at one point. Some players just take longer to finally put everything together, and it seems to be the case with Derek Hill.
Hill was great in the 10-5 loss to the New York Mets. He hit a two-run home run and made a remarkable catch. Manager Clayton McCullough described what happened perfectly:
"That was one of the best catches I’ve ever seen live. To go all out there, full extension on the warning track, racing toward the wall, that’s as good a catch as you’ll see"
Tyrone Taylor, whose home run was robbed by Hill said this:
"That was sick, bro. Unreal. I didn't know off the bat, but after a couple steps, I saw nobody there at all. I was like, 'Oh, yeah!' Then he Supermanned that thing. Pretty incredible."
Derek Hill certainly looks like he could turn into a true gem finding for Peter Bendix. He's already 29 years old and in his prime, and appears to be a late-bloomer, so maybe his prime will last a bit longer.
