Once again, a brutal 2024 season has led to the Miami Marlins picking in the top 10 again. While that means that the regular season was a slog to live through, the pick placement is pretty fortuitous especially given that the 2025 MLB Draft has a top tier of prospects that goes around nine to 11 players deep.
The most recent mock draft from Baseball America had the Marlins circling Auburn catcher Ike Irish as their pick in the first round. However, the most likely outcome was always that Miami would just see what the top six teams do and scoop up their favorite of who is left.
Well, that strategy worked very well as Miami selected Oregon State shortstop Aiva Arquette with their first round pick at seventh overall.
Marlins select
Arquette was pretty widely consider to be the best college position player in this year's draft. He makes consistent and loud contact and at 6'5 and 220 pounds, you can see him adding even more strength as a pro. All signs point to him being able to stick at shortstop and being a hitter that could easily blast through the minor leagues pretty quickly. Don't expect much of a draft bonus slot discount given how highly Arquette is thought of, but a very solid pick nonetheless.
Miami is now going to have to wait a little bit before they get to make another pick. The Marlins own the #43 pick in the comp round between rounds 1 and 2 following almost immediately with the #46 pick in the second round. Miami does have the sixth highest draft bonus pool in 2025 at $15,187,400, so expect them to be in the middle of some fireworks as the first day of the draft goes on.
