Miami Marlins rivals the Philadelphia Phillies are looking to shake things up and they have some interesting ideas about that. As we wait for The Fish to make some moves, we have to settle for looking at what the team's division rivals do instead. In this case Philly. So what will the team do this off-season? Upgrade their defense and offense at third base? Sign Willy Adames?
Miami Marlins rivals from Philly are looking to shake things up.
I already wrote about how the Philadelphia Phillies may not have as much of a winning core as we thought. They clearly think the same and apparently one of their plans is to replace Alec Bohm with Alex Bregman? Bohm has never been rated particularly highly as a defender. He batted .280/.332/.448, with 15 home runs and 97 RBI in 143 games and 554 AB in 2024.
Alex Bregman of the Houston Astros would be an obvious upgrade to that production. Bregman has batted .260/.315/.453, with 26 home runs and 75 RBI in 145 games and 581 AB. There was a big difference in WAR between the two however. Bregman was worth 4.1 WAR in 2024, and Bohm was worth 3.0 WAR. Bregman was also worth 1.0 dWAR, while Bohm was only worth 0.1 dWAR.
There's another third base option for the Miami Marlins rivals. It turns out that Willy Adames is willing to move to another position. Philly is interested in Adames for their third base vacancy. The vacancy of course will only happen if they do move Bohm, as reportedly they're very open to doing as they attempt to shake up the team.
Willy Adames was surprisingly bad defensively at SS in 2024, after being an elite defender in prior years. He did however bat .251/.331/.462, with 32 home runs and 112 RBI in 161 games and 610 AB in 2024. Philly would get an offensive boost by signing him, but I wonder about his contact and strikeout rate going forward, I certainly don't see him as a good dead for a team that signs him.
