A potential breakout might really help out the Miami Marlins long-term. There are also some prospects who could break out as well. Well, there could be more interesting additions to the team and it's intriguing to take a look at the possibility. How about Peter Bendix go after Joey Gallo on the free agent market?
Joey Gallo could be an interesting option for the Miami Marlins.
Joey Gallo was an interesting bat for quite some time. In his prime seasons from 2017 to 2019 with the Texas Rangers, Gallo was an elite power hitter when healthy. In both 2017 and 2018, he hit 41 and 40 home runs in the two seasons. Even in 2021, he was still pretty good as he hit 38 home runs.
Gallo was also not a bad defender and even showed some speed from time to time. It certainly didn't come without any limitations. He was always a contender to lead the Majors in strikeouts and he was always hitting barely above the "Mendoza Line". Those limitations made him less desirable and ultimately led to him jumping between multiple teams.
the last time we saw Joey Gallo play was in 2024 with the Washington Nationals. He batted .161/.277/.336, with 10 home runs and 27 RBI in 76 games and 223 AB. It was a terrible performance and was worth just 0.3 WAR. He wasn't much better in 2023, when he batted .177/.301/.440, with 21 home runs and 40 RBI in 111 games and 282 AB for the Minnesota Twins. A performance worth 0.5 WAR.
That poor offensive production is why Gallo decided to switch to pitching. He always had a good arm in right field and actually pitched before he was a Major League hitter. Gallo is 31 years old, which might seem a bit late for such a career change, but it's possible that he can pull it off. It does make me wonder if the Miami Marlins shouldn't just take a cahnce on him. Why not see if he can actually become effective in his new role? He should come cheap to acquire.
