The loss of Braxton Garrett creates a unique and potentially dangerous problem for the Miami Marlins. Outside of ace Sandy Alcantara, the club has a startling lack of proven starting pitchers. Continuing down this path endangers the young developing pitchers in Miami's system.
The Marlins have yet to invest a single dollar in a free agent this offseason. This needs to change for the franchise to safely and effectively navigate the 2025 MLB season.
Where could the Miami Marlins turn to address their starting pitching problem?
The current free agent class still has many helpful innings eaters left. While it may not make sense for Miami to invest in an upper-tier starter like Jack Flaherty or Nick Pivetta, the market is still flush with more cost-effective options.
Option #1: Jose Quintana
Quintana was an underrated quality starter in 2024. The veteran pitched 170 strong innings to the tune of a 3.75 ERA and 135 strikeouts. He was also stellar during the New York Mets postseason run, recording 11 straight innings of run-free baseball in the NLWC and NLDS.
His success in the postseason could prompt a contending team to offer him a short-term contract. However, Quintana is entering his age 36 season. There are few guarantees at this stage in the longtime starter's career. If Bendix and the Marlins seriously pursued him, they could steal an NL East weapon and add a valuable innings eater.
