It was an unheralded trade in the beginning of this year, when Peter Bendix acquired Matt Mervis from the Chicago Cubs. I saw some potential in him, but it was hard to predict if he was truly a change of scenery candidate. It turned out that he really was! Mervis is looking like a star for The Fish at this point in the season. I just hope that he keeps it going.

Matt Mervis is turning into a star for the Miami Marlins.

The 26 year old first baseman Matt Mervis is under team control through the 2030 season. It certainly doesn't get much better than that. That means that he's not going anywhere anytime soon, and might be a part of the next contending Miami Marlins team.

Prior to this season, there wasn't much going on with him. His career batting line with the Chicago Cubs was .155/.222/.259 over the 2023 and 2024 seasons. It wasn't a surprise that there wasn't much demand for him and that the Cubs ultimately passed on keeping him around. To be fair, those were short sample sizes but the point still stands.

So far in the 2025 season, Mervis has batted .281/.333/.656, with 4 home runs and 8 RBI in 10 games and 32 AB. He does have more strikeouts than hits, but he can always turn things around. He has a 94.9 Exit Velocity, that shows that his power is indeed elite. He's finally living up to the potential that he was showing in the Minors.

Are there any warning signs with him? Well...his BABIP is pretty high at .333, considering his career one is .227, but he can always end up having that BABIP only go down slightly. Maybe it should be closer to .300 for him. I do expect his batting average to go down, but the power is real. I'm very excited about Matt Mervis and everything that he's currently offering the Miami Marlins. This was a master trade by Peter Bendix. It's a trade that the Cubs would love to have back. What do you think about him?
