The Miami Marlins continue to navigate a season filled with injuries, surprises, and emerging talent. With roster moves happening on a near-weekly basis, the club has had to dig deep to stay afloat in the National League. Fortunately for Miami, some reinforcements have stepped up in a big way. From injury updates to the emergence of a new pitching asset, here’s the latest news from South Florida.

Xavier Edwards' Injury Update

Shortstop Xavier Edwards, a key player for the Marlins, left the game against the Chicago Cubs on May 14th with a left mid-back strain, but he didn't get placed on the IL until May 18. After finishing 1-for-4 in a game that the Marlins took from the Cubs, 3-1 on May 14, Edwards wouldn't play again until his rehab assignment that started on May 29.

Despite this setback, Edwards has returned from the injured list on May 31, but will not be in the starting lineup just yet. As Craig Mish reported a few days ago, once Edwards is back in the lineup, he will take over the second base duties, while Otto Lopez continues to play well at the shortstop position.

Declan Cronin Reinstated from Injured List, Sent to Triple-A Jacksonville

Reliever Declan Cronin has been reinstated from the injured list, finally getting an opportunity to rehab the right way. Cronin's return couldn't come at a better time as Miami is somewhat over-performing so far this year, and their bullpen could use more veteran leadership to help them throughout the rest of the season. His presence adds depth and experience to the bullpen, which has faced challenges due to injuries and workload.

Janson Junk Shines in Early Outings

Right-hander Janson Junk has made an immediate impact since joining the Marlins' pitching staff. In his recent appearances, Junk has demonstrated impressive control and effectiveness on the mound. Notably, in a game against the Los Angeles Angels on May 24, 2025, he delivered a solid five-inning performance, allowing just one run on six hits, striking out four, and earning his first save of the season.

Also, he got an opportunity to start against one of the hottest teams in the National League, the San Francisco Giants. He also pitched well, tossing 55 pitches through four innings, allowing three hits, zero runs, and striking out five.

Junk's ability to step into high-leverage situations and deliver quality innings has been a significant asset for the Marlins. His performances have provided much-needed stability to a pitching staff dealing with injuries and roster adjustments.

As the Marlins look to turn the tide and claw their way back into contention, they’ll rely on players like Xavier Edwards getting back to full health and unexpected contributors like Janson Junk continuing to deliver. With arms returning to the bullpen and fresh faces making their mark, Miami’s roster is evolving—and the pieces might just be falling into place at the right time.
