Miami Marlins rivals are suddenly struggling and The Fish all of a sudden have a chance to have a decent season. It's no wonder then that The Fish are now improving across the board, with the lineup doing better than expected. One key player in this is starting pitcher Max Meyer. He seems to finally be living up to his old top prospect hype.
Max Meyer is finally breaking out for the Miami Marlins.
Max Meyer used to be a top prospect for the Miami Marlins, projected to be an ace of the future. I was actually there for his first start in the Majors back in 2022. Ultimately, the 2022 season didn't go too well for the young pitcher. He finished the season with a 7.50 ERA/6.45 FIP, with 9.0 K/9 and 3.0 BB/9, in 2 games and 6.0 innings pitched. He was worth -0.1 WAR.
Things got worse for Meyer, as he missed the entire 2023 season due to Tommy John surgery. He would return in 2024. Last season, he pitched to a 5.68 ERA/5.90 FIP, with 7.3 K/9 and 3.0 BB/9 in 11 games and 57.0 innings pitched. He was worth 0.1 WAR and didn't look like a future ace at all.
Entering this season, the narrative on Meyer seemed to be that he wasn't a future top of the rotation arm. He was at best a bottom of the rotation starter, who might or might not even stick in the rotation. There was even some talk that his future was actually in the bullpen! It's crazy to even think about that now. He's certainly proven to be a lot better than that.
So far this season, Max Meyer has pitched to a 3.09 ERA/2.66 FIP, with 11.6 K/9 and 2.3 BB/9 in 2 games and 11.2 innings pitched. He's been worth 0.1 WAR so far. It's still early of course, but he suddenly looks like the top of the rotation arm that we always wanted him to one day become. I hope that he keeps pitching this well going forward. He certainly looks like a star.
