It looks like catcher Nick Fortes turned the corner by the end of the 2024 season. It doesn't mean that the Miami Marlins are set at the position, but the OF does seem to be a more pressing concern going forward. MLB.com had a really bizarre piece of advice to fix the team's catching situation however. I'm actually not sure what they were even thinking suggesting that Peter Bendix sign Gary Sanchez.
There is no reason for the Miami Marlins to sign Gary Sanchez.
It's definitely reasonable to suggest that the Miami Marlins bring in some help for the catching position. That said, the solution is certainly not Gary Sanchez. The MLB.com article says that The Fish need power in the lineup, and that Sanchez brings that to the team. I guess we're meant to just forget how important defense at catcher is to a team. There's a reason why Sanchez was mostly a Designated Hitter in 2024 with the Milwaukee Brewers.
Gary Sanchez batted .220/.307/.392, with 11 home runs and 37 RBI in 89 games and 245 AB. He was worth 0.2 WAR and a dreadful -0.3 dWAR. For his career, he's a .224/.309/.463 hitter known for being a pretty poor defender. It's hard to see what value he'll bring with is glove, when there's plenty of power bats to be had on the cheap.
The Miami Marlins are better off focusing on defense for catcher and looking for power elsewhere. It just doesn't make sense to sign someone who is so one-dimensional. Last season, he was better to be fair. Playing for the San Diego Padres, he batted .218/.292/.500, with 19 home runs and 46 RBI in 72 games and 234 AB. It was that performance that earned him the Milwaukee deal for this season.
Gary Sanchez was worth 2.5 WAR in 2023, and even had a solid 1.2 dWAR. That said, his career track record makes him someone that it just doesn't make any sense for the Miami Marlins to sign. The Fish are better off without signing Sanchez to play catcher for the team in 2025.
