Historically, the Miami Marlins have had the "golden touch" at every infield position save one- shortstop.
The drought will apparently be continuing in 2025. Rawlings put out their finalist list for the NL Wednesday afternoon, and while it featured three Marlins, none of them received the nod for their work at shortstop.
In other words, no love for Otto Lopez, despite having a pretty stellar defensive season in his own right. Lopez ranked near the top of the leaderboards in both Outs Above Average and Defensive Runs Saved at short, and perhaps more impressively, also spent the first month of the season being an above average defender for the Marlins at second base. A frustrating result, even if all the finalists did finish ahead of Lopez in at least one major fielding category. One can still be a great defender without Gold Glove recognition from the kind people at Rawlings.
Then again, Marlins fans have had to say that to themselves an awful lot when it comes to their starting shortstop across franchise history. It's not as if shortstop is the only position when a Marlin has never won the award either. Center field and left field have also gone unrecognized. However, shortstop stands well apart from those two spots for just how maddeningly close the vote has to have been on occasion, and for the quality of defense Miami has had to call upon at the six spot in the infield.
Edgar Renteria. Jose Reyes. Adeiny Hechavarria. Miguel Rojas. Oh, and some guy named Alex Gonzalez- easily the most egregious oversight on this list. All above average defenders, all always in the conversation. Renteria, at least, would go on to win a couple with the Cardinals- though that 2002 award likely came at the expense of Gonzalez. Lopez' great glove work fits right in with this group of overlooked Web Gem generators.
Welcome to the club, Otto. Here's hoping you can make some team history in 2026.
