2 Miami Marlins Prospects make the MLB Futures All-Star Game
Last years' futures game featured many big leaguers who got their shot this season
On Saturday July 8th in Seattle at 7pm eastern time zone, Miami Marlins prospects will join the rest of the MLB prospects in the 24th rendition of the MLB All-Star futures game. Many stars from last year have made big league rosters this year, including two favorites for the 2023 National League Rookie of the year, Corbin Carroll and Eury Perez.
Last year Eury Perez dazzled in the MLB futures game with one scoreless inning pitched, not allowing a hit or walk and striking out one batter. Perez was the only Marlin prospect invited to last years game and in 2021 Jake Eder and Max Meyer pitched in the game. This year's Miami Marlins invites are pitcher Patrick Monteverde and infielder Nasim Nunez, both from AA Pensacola.
Patrick Monteverde, SP
Patrick Monteverde was an 8th round selection by the Miami Marlins in the 2021 draft and is having a phenomenal year. Monteverde is 7-1 with a 2.13 ERA in his 12 starts this year, while boasting a 1.020 WHIP. Monteverde's command of the strike zone and strikeout rates truly shine this year, as he is averaging 10.5 strikeouts per 9 innings, 3.3 walks per 9 innings, and only 5.9 hits per 9 innings. Monteverde will show to be a great add to the game and he has a bright future ahead.
Nasim Nunez, SS
Nasim Nunez was drafted by the Miami Marlins in the 2nd round of the 2019 draft and is also having a great season so far with the AA Blue Wahoos. Nasim Nunez has played in 68 games and has 320 plate appearances with a slash line of .226/.343/.308, which are slightly below his prior years numbers but none the less he is doing well. Nunez' biggest factor at the plate is his speed and that continues to shine this year as he has totaled 33 stolen bases in 36 attempts.
Last year between both high A Beloit and AA Pensacola he totaled an amazing 70 stolen bases in 86 attempts. If he continues to be a factor on the basepaths he will certainly be a disruptor to opposing teams and one the Marlins could use, especially with the larger bases. He could be another prospect to watch in the coming years, especially in spring training in 2024.
