The 2023 Miami Marlins draft picks are all in action in the Marlins system and some are getting used to professional baseball while others never skipped a beat.  The Marlins drafted a ton of pitchers this year and so many of the players have only a few different appearances but there are some notable actions.

The Marlins 1st round picks were both high school starters and will have a much longer battle to make it up to the big leagues.  While their time make take longer than others, both Noble Meyer and Thomas White are very highly rated and among the Marlins top prospects.   Meyer is ranked the top prospect and White is ranked second on their top 30 prospects list.

The Marlins assigned both White and Meyer to the FCL Marlins rookie league, while some of the older players were assigned low A with Jupiter.   The projected timeline for Meyer is 2026 and 2027 for White as per mlb.com’s ranking but either way, those years put the two High School phenoms on a short path to the big leagues.   If those years come to fruition, Meyer will be 21 and White 22 when called up which would be impressive.  The following updates will provide progress for some of the Marlins top draft picks.

Noble Meyer - FCL Marlins

Noble Meyer was drafted in the July MLB draft as the Marlins first pick.  Meyer had been added to the FCL Marlins, and he has started two games on August 5th and August 12th.

Meyer was likely nervous in his first big league start and went only 1.2 innings giving up 2 hits and 2 earned runs, striking out 2.   In his second start he fared much better and he didn’t disappoint. In his second start he went 2.1 innings giving up no runs or hits, walking 2 batters and striking out 4.  What a great bounce back start for Meyer and hopefully a vision of things to come as he moves up the ranks.  Meyer will likely start again later this week so hopefully he will show out once again.

Thomas White - FCL Marlins

Thomas White was the extended first round pick of the Marlins and his start with the club has been slowed.  White took a much higher signing bonus and therefore took longer for him to agree to the terms and sign.

Since it took so long for him to get signed, he has not started with the same zeal and energy as Meyer, and therefore has not started a game as of yet.  White is assigned to the FCL Marlins, so it should be soon that he gets his first start.

Kemp Alderman - Jupiter

The Miami Marlins second round draft pick was outfielder Kemp Alderman.  Alderman has struggled to transition to big league ball so far and has yet to show off his full array of talents.

Alderman has played in 15 games and totaled 52 at-bats while only slashing .173/.232/.192 with an OPS at .424.  Those numbers no where near reflect his potential. He currently has only 9 hits and only 1 of those is a double while driving in 5 and striking out 17 times.

Alderman showed off his awesome power in his draft pick batting practice at loanDepot park it that has not translated.   Alderman could be a big time future outfielder for the Marlins if he can show his power.  He will have plenty of opportunity to snap out of his slump, but it may take until the fall league starts up for him to really shine.

Brock Vradenburg - Jupiter

First baseman Brock Vradenburg was the Marlins third round draft pick.  Vradenburg was another high draft pick power hitter by the Marlins to try and help rebuild their system with some more powerful players.  Vradenburg has unfortunately suffered the same fate as Alderman so far in his short career.

Vradenburg has played in 13 games and is struggling to find hits with only 4 total.  In 38 at-bats so far he is slashing .105/.277/.158 with an OPS of .435.  Vradenburg has also struck out 16 times and only has 2 doubles.  He has a ton of power and like Alderman has yet to show off his true talents.  Hopefully he will have a short adjustment period then really show why the Marlins picked him so high.
