3 Miami Marlins players standing out in AAA that the Marlins could trade or call up
Now that we are a third of the way into the Major League Baseball season and the minor leagues are in full swing, it's time to look at who is performing in the Miami Marlins system. The Miami Marlins like every other team will have two roster spots to call up players in September and perhaps sooner, if the trade deadline gives opportunities to AAA players. We will examine some of the Miami Marlins prospects on the AAA Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp roster who could either be trade bait or call up material this season.
Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp Center Fielder Jake Mangum
Center fielder Jake Mangum has been hot and his production seemed to be a good match for the Miami Marlins current needs in center field. Kim Ng decided not to call up Mangum but rather trade one of their younger prospects for a journeyman outfielder. It is unclear as to why Kim Ng decided that as Mangum to date is hitting .291 with two home runs, 23 RBI, and seven stolen bases.
Mangum will have a tough road to the roster if current outfielders on the Miami Marlins roster keep performing. Jorge Soler, Bryan De La Cruz, Jesus Sanchez, and the currently injured Jazz Chisholm, Jr. have all been playing very well and all have had recent hot streaks. Mangum will have to show that he is better than Garrett Hampson who is hitting .239 with one home run, nine RBI, and one stolen base and is the one remaining outfielder on the roster who will possibly remain once Jazz returns.
Miami Marlins Prospect, Shortstop Jacob Amaya
The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp shortstop Jacob Amaya has been performing well and with Joey Wendle struggling, he could be a good option to bring up. Amaya currently has hit eight home runs and driven in 28 with a slash line of .282/.360/.475 and an OPS of .835. It's hard to see where he would need any improvement offensively, I think he could be one of the top prospects to get the nod in September, especially if Wendle is still struggling and no trade is made at the deadline.
Xavier Edwards has been in between the Miami Marlins and Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp all year
It seems that Xavier Edwards is on the brink of becoming a regular Miami Marlins player. Edwards has been up and down and in his 21 at bats this year with the Marlins he has 8 hits, 2 RBI, 1 stolen base, and an .810 OPS. He has the versatility to play multiple positions and is hitting .320 in AAA with six RBI and eight stolen bases. Edwards' primary position is taken by the soon to be All Star Arraez but he can be a valuable asset off the bench as a pinch hitter, runner, or fill in for off days.
