The Miami Marlins are hot and on their way to making the playoffs in October, but three players they could easily do without coming down the stretch. We will take a look at contributions and lack thereof for three players who should not be on the roster come August 1st.

Garrett Hampson, OF/SS

This is kind of a no brainer but Hampson was called up to address the depth issue with the series of injuries in the outfield and he has be ok but no where close to the production that is needed. Hampson provides flexibility but he is currently slashing .240/.324/.339 with an OPS of .662 and only one home run and nine RBI. Hampson's hard hit percentage is down this year from a miniscule 28.3% to a 25.9% and his exit velocity has dropped, while striking out 27% of the time. There just is no place for him on the roster, especially if Jacob Amaya keeps hitting.

Jean Segura, 3B

Jean Segura has been nothing short of a flop since he signed in the off-season with the Miami Marlins. Segura is playing at one of the prime power hitting positions on the field and hasn't produced even close to the league average. Segura is slashing .190/.259/.234 with a .493 OPS, it doesn't get much worse than that if you want to play in this league. If Segura can be offloaded on another team, I welcome that, but in reality no one wants him and he should just be cut.

Segra has one home run and 11 RBI for the season and was just put on the IL and Jacob Amaya has been called up to fill in around the infield for the Miami Marlins. Segura has a -1.6 WAR this season and Amaya, in his 4 at-bats has a 0.1 WAR and 2 RBI, and will surpass Segura in production in a month if he is given the opportunity. Jeimer Candelario or Patrick Wisdom would be an improvement over Segura and should be cheap.

Avisail Garcia, OF

Avisail Garcia has been another big disappointment for the Miami Marlins, and one that hurts the most, as he has a huge contract for a small market team. Garcia has a 4 year/53 Million dollar contract that runs through 2025 with a team option for 2026, making him the second highest paid player on the Marlins roster, behind Jorge Soler.

Garcia has been injured both years he has been with the Marlins and for a significant amount of time both years, out for one month in August of 2022 and he has been out since the start of May this season. Garcia is slashing .188/.243/.333 with an OPS of .577 which is similar to last year's production as he slashed .224/.266/.317 with an OPS of .582. There is no reason to believe there will be any changes to that level of production in the future. Teams might take an interest in trading for Garcia if they look at his past potential, and the Marlins would do well to trade him and sign a power hitter for the middle of the lineup.
