3 Miami Marlins who’s spring training was a fluke, and 2 that wasn’t
Spring Training is mostly a warm-up for veterans but how indicative is it of their season?
Now that we are 78 games into the season it’s a fair enough trial to determine where players are at on the Miami Marlins roster. Spring training is usually a tough way to determine success because players are invited from all levels to join the big league club and show their stuff. Here are several players that spring training was indicative of their season and some not.
Jean Segura, 3B - Fluke
Miami Marlins 3rd baseman Jean Segura has been on the hot seat all season. Fans hope he would turn it around but that has not happened and we are almost at the All-Star break. Segura is hitting .190 with 1 home run and 11 RBI so far this season, nothing close to his spring numbers. Segura hit .324 with 2 doubles and 3 RBI in 34 at-bats. Fans would take anything close to that production right now.
Troy Johnston, 1B, AA - Fluke
Miami Marlins prospect Troy Johnston did not show off at all this spring, hitting .091 and 1 RBI. Johnston has since mowed down competition in Pensacola, hitting .266 with 12 home runs and 51 RBI, already surpassing last years totals in 22 fewer games.
Jacob Amaya, SS - Fluke
If anyone prospect had a shot at making a big impact on the Miami Marlins opening day roster, it was Jacob Amaya, yet he struggled this spring. Amaya hit .053 with just one single in 19 at-bats and 9 strikeouts. Amaya has since show he has more to give. In his recent stint with Miami, Amaya is hitting .222 with 2 RBI and 1 stolen base and only 1 strikeout in 9 at-bats.
Victor Mesa, Jr., CF - Yes Indicative
Miami Marlins prospect Victor Mesa Jr. Hit .455 with 1 home run and 3 RBI in spring training this year which just got him started. He is hitting .259 this season in AA with 6 home runs, 33 RBI and 9 stolen bases. Mesa Jr. has certainly kept that momentum going after spring training.
Xavier Edwards, 2B - Yes Indicative
Miami Marlins infield prospect Xavier Edwards had a very strong spring training while hitting .353 with 2 RBI. Edwards continued that success when called up to the Marlins, hitting .381 with 2 RBI. He also is hitting .327 in Jacksonville with 2 home runs and 16 RBI while stealing 11 bags. He has kept the momentum going from spring training and could be on the short list for September call ups as such.
