It's generally negative news regarding the Miami Marlins lately. Injuries and bad game results have been the norm lately and it's very frustrating. Is there even any reason for optimism for this season any more? One of the questionable decisions, was not signing J.D. Martinez to be the team's new designated hitter. If The Fish want to add a cheap bat though...

The Miami Marlins should just sign Brandon Belt for the DH mix.

It's definitely questionable when it comes to what the Miami Marlins should do next. Should the team start sellng off players and punt the season? Should The Fish actually try to turn the season around and make some moves? I suggest doing something in the middle. Why not sign a solid free agent bat to a one-year deal? He can be flipped at the Trade Deadline if he hits well, and if he does not then it's just a one-year deal.

The free agent that I'm talking about is 1B/DH Brandon Belt. The 35 year old left-handed hitter spent most of his career with the San Francisco Giants. He played for the team from 2011 to 2022, batting .261/.356/.468 throughout that time. He won two World Series with the team in 2012 and 2014 as well.

Belt's best season during that time took place in either the shortened 2020 season, or 2013. In 2013, he batted .289/.360/.481 with 17 home runs and 67 RBI, in 150 games and 509 AB. In 2020, he batted .309/.425/591 with 9 home runs and 30 RBI, in 51 games and 149 AB. The one big problem that Belt had throughout his career is his injury-proneness. In 2023, he batted .254/.369/.490 with 19 home runs and 43 RBI, in 103 games and 339 AB. He did this as a full-time DH for the Toronto Blue Jays.

Brandon Belt is not a difference-making bat, and you can argue that there's no point in bringing him in at this point. He is however likely to not cost much on a one-year deal and if he hits well enough, the Miami Marlins can move him at the Trade Deadline.
