Miami Marlins' ace Sandy Alcantara has yet to return to his 2022 form this season, but could he make May his month? In his five starts this season Alcantara has a five ERA and only one win. In his only win of the year to date he showed Marlins fans just why he is the reigning Cy Young, tossing a complete game shut out. In that game against the Twins he gave up only three hits and struck out five in the friendly confines of LoanDepot Park.
Can Marlins' Ace Alcantara Ace May?
Alcantara will have his work cut out for him in his first start in May as he opens the series and month for the Marlins against the Braves. He fared well last time they met up in his last start going 5.2 innings and giving up two runs in Atlanta. Alcantara won't get off easy the rest of the month as he is projected to face some of the top teams in the National League. If the rotation follows its projected path he will have to face the Cubs at Wrigley, the Reds at home, the Giants away, the Rockies away, and finally the Padres at home.
The Braves and Padres will certainly be tough matchups for Alcantara as both teams are stacked with talent but they both are at home. He might have the edge at home as he is currently holding opponents to a .171 batting average at home versus .326 away, including a .200 BAbip. The Giants are playing below their talent level but they are always tough at home and pitching in Denver can be unpredictable. Those games aside, the Cubs and Reds could be breakout starts, similar to the Twins game and if the conditions are favorable in Colorado that could easily be three quality starts. Time will tell but it seems like the month of May could be a boon for the Marlins behind the leadership of Alcantara, if the bats can support his efforts. The bats could be the biggest question mark, as he has received very little run support as a starter. All that being said, I love the Marlins and Alcantara's chances at a great month of May.
