After all the fanfare surrounding the first major league appearance for the Miami Marlins and the 20 year old star in the making lived up to the hype. Eury Perez made history as he stepped onto the field as he is now the Miami Marlins record holder for the youngest pitcher to start a game in franchise history. He made quite a statement for his first start, striking out one of the Reds hitters on a 98 MPH heater and many more on braking pitches scattered throughout the low to mid 80s.

Eury Perez dealt on Friday night lasting only 4.2 innings over 88 pitches. Perez had a good line for the night, punching out seven and giving up two runs on four hits and two walks.  Perez make only a few mistakes giving up the long hall in the fourth and fifth inning to Tyler Stephenson and Jake Fraley respectively.

Perez starts off his MLB career with a 3.86 ERA and gave the Marlins the ability to win the game but the bullpen collapsed.  I for one think he was pulled way too early.  Perez was pulled after a home run on his 88th pitch but he already had two outs in the 5th inning and could easily have finished out five without stretching his arm at all.    That move by Skip Schumacher is a part of a series of decisions that has stretched the Marlins bullpen to the max.  Several starting pitchers have been pulled at around 90 pitches in different games when they could work through another inning or so and get pulled around 100.

In all it was a great start to Eury Perez’ career and he looks to stay up with the big club and be a big part of the rotation.  The 6’8” starter is potentially going to start next on Thursday the 18th versus the Washington Nationals at 1:10pm at loanDepot park. I for one am looking forward to another solid start for the 20 year old.
