How the Miami Marlins can improve

MLB.com published an interesting article today about what each team needs to do to improve. With the Miami Marlins, the writers said that the rotation needs to improve. They say that it's been underwhelming so far, after having a combined 3.70 ERA last season. I agree. The rotation is better than it has been so far, and help is on the way with Eury Perez. How does the rest of the rotation look?

MLB.com wants the Miami Marlins rotation to improve.

The obvious elephant in the room is the reigning National League Cy Young award winner Sandy Alcantara. Sandy was a major topic of concern since the season began. The ace had a 2.28 ERA/2.99 FIP last season. He has a 4.53 ERA/3.63 FIP this season. It's pretty clear to me that he's just having some bad luck. One of the issues is that he had a .262 BABIP last season, and has a career .272 BABIP. This season hitters have a .303 BABIP against him. That's going to come down, and when hat happens, so will his ERA.

Jesus Luzardo had a 3.32 ERA/3.12 FIP last season. This season he has a 3.38 ERA/3.75 FIP. There's not much of a difference here, and I expect him to actually even get better going forward. Trevor Rogers started the season off badly, but was back to his 2021 ace form in his last two starts. He's currently on the injured list, but once he's back, he should be able to continue pitching the way he did in those two starts.

Johnny Cueto has had a disastrous start to his Miami Marlins career, he's also on the injured list to make things worse. Cueto has a 36.00 ERA/32.31 FIP in the one inning that he's pitched so far. He can't possibly be this bad, so I fully expect him to pitch better once he comes back. The obvious wild card here is Edward Cabrera. He was lights out last season with a 3.01 ERA, but this season he has a 5.35 ERA. His strikeout rate went up from 9.4 to 12.5, but his walk rate declined from 4.1 to 7.6. The control issues are really hurting him.

The Miami Marlins rotation will improve, will the team be able to ride it to the playoffs?
