Injured List (ear infection) Miami Marlins first baseman Garrett Cooper began his rehab assignment on Friday night May 12. Cooper was starting for the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp the Marlins AAA team.

Updated!

His rehab stint was cut short with the injuries to both Sanchez and Jazz and Cooper is now in the starting lineup on Sunday with the big club. Cooper will be batting second Sunday behind Berti, followed by Arraez, Soler, and De La Cruz. Neither Sanchez nor Jazz are in the lineup and Gurriel is also on the bench for the series' final game.

Cooper started his first game for rehab on Friday May 12th for Jacksonville and went 0-for-4 with one strikeout. Cooper did not play Saturday night after the injuries to the two starters on the Marlins. Cooper had a hot start to the season with the Marlins but has not hit a home run since April 9th and as such a steady fall in his slugging percentage. While Cooper has been out Yuli Gurriel is getting plenty of playing time but his stats do not match up well with Coopers projections.

Another former Marlin Xavier Edwards, who had a short stint with the Marlins to start his major league career, did very well Saturday night. Edwards went 3-for-5 with a run and a RBI in a solid start for AAA Jacksonville. He is hitting .315 with 5 RBI and 7 stolen bases so far with Jacksonville. Edwards will definitely get a look to be one of the two fall call ups when the expanded roster comes available.

The Marlins will finish out the final match against the Reds Sunday at loanDepot park at 1:40pm. The Reds have taken two away from the Marlins who are in desperate need of arms for their bullpen and have lost both games by means of the bullpen giving runs up late. Hopefully when Cooper returns to the lineup the Marlins can score more runs so the bullpen becomes less of a factor in their games.
