It's no secret that the Miami Marlins are looking for SS help and we're hoping that Peter Bendix has a good plan. In the meantime, The Fish are making depth trades to well improve the team's depth. The trade in question involved the team acquiring IF Jonah Bride from the Oakland Athletics for cash. How can Bride help the team? It's time for some analysis!
The Miami Marlins acquired more IF depth, but it's still not the move that we need.
I'm all for improving The Fish's depth. Depth protects from injuries and helps with positional versatility, if a new defensive replacement is needed on the team. The downside is that we keep hearing about minor moves, when the Miami Marlins badly need both a SS and a DH. With Spring Training right around the corner, time seems to be running out on that front.
So who exactly is Jonah Bride? Bride is basicially a utility bat who can play third base, second base and first base. He can't however play shortstop, the one position which The Fish need help in. He's a career .192/.296/.232 hitter in 98 games and 250 AB. He did this over the 2022-2023 span with the Oakland Athletics. He seems to have been average defensively, with a 0.3 dWAR in 2022 and 0.0 in 2023.
Jonah Bride doesn't have an impressive Exit Velocity, though it rose from 86.4 in 2022 to 88.1 in 2023. He's not good at getting on base, but he is good at controlling the strike zone. He has an 18.4% career strikeout percentage. He also has a decent 10.2% walk percentage. Can the 28 year old unlock something with the bat this upcoming season? Probably not if we're being honest. He's likely exactly what he is at this point.
The Miami Marlins did make a 40-man roster move to clear space for Bride. 3B Jordan Groshans has been designated for assignment. Groshans made his Major League debut with The Fish in 2022. He batted .262/.308/.311, with a home run and 2 RBI, in 17 games and 61 AB. The 24 year old had an 87.1 EV and has batted a disappointing .243/.339/.330 in the Minors in 2023.
