Miami Marlins are looking to trade a different starting pitcher...
Which Miami Marlins starting pitcher will be traded before Spring Training?
The Miami Marlins need to improve the team before Spring Training begins in three weeks. There have already been some trade rumors and concerns about them as well. Specifically, it's been Jesús Luzardo, but now it just might be someone else... Who am I talking about? Edward Cabrera of course.
The Miami Marlins may now be looking to trade Edward Cabrera to improve the team's hitting
Jesús Luzardo is likely to be the Miami Marlins ace in 2024. He had a 3.58 ERA/3.55 FIP, with 10.5 K/9 and 2.8 BB/9, in 32 games and 178.2 innings pitched. He does have an injury history and his years of control are dwindling, as his arbitration control ends after the 2026 season. It appears now that The Fish are not as committed to trading Luzardo. I agree that it's the right call.
The starting pitcher that The Fish would prefer to trade is the aforementioned Edward Cabrera. The former top prospect has been all over the place since his Major League debut with the team in 2021. His strikeout rates have been 9.6 in 2021, 9.4 in 2022 and 10.7 in 2023. He's an elite strikeout pitcher in other words. His walk rates however are a different story: 6.5 in 2021, 4.1 in 2022 and 6.0 in 2023.
The stable thing here is Edward Cabrera's FIP, which went from 6.63 in 2021, to 4.59 in 2022 and 4.43 in 2023. His FIP improved annually, which is a very positive sign for the future. Things are less appealing on the ERA front. His ERA's were 5.81 in 2021, 3.01 in 2022 an 4.24 in 2023. The 2022 performance was Cy Young worthy, but sadly was unmatched by his FIP.
It's obvious that Edward Cabrera has the potential to be an ace. He also has potential to just be a mid-rotation to bottom of the rotation arm, who is inconsistent and just can't put it all together. This mystery may be the reason why Peter Bendix is open to moving him now to maximize the return. It really just all depends on what kind of pitcher he will ultimately become.
