Miami Marlins Deadline deals already paying dividends
The bullpen was ready to jump in to help
The Miami Marlins closed out their series with the Detroit Tigers in dramatic fashion with a big comeback win in late innings. The Marlins faithful got to enjoy their first glimpse of the trade deadline players at the same time, which was a beautiful sight. The Marlins ended up taking 2 of 3 games from the Detroit Tigers and strengthened their position in the wild card race.
Sunday night proved to be a great night for the Marlins front office to showcase their new talent in a high leverage situation. Former closer A.J. Puk gave up one right Saturday night and turned around Sunday and gave up the lead, allowing two runs and three hits in 0.1 innings of work.
Newly acquired Jorge Lopez came to the rescue to finish out the inning and went 0.2 innings with no hits and one strikeout. Lopez did a great job and cleared the way for the Marlins to take the lead and march on to victory in the bottom of the inning, taking the lead on a 2 run homer by Cooper. Segura then added to the lead giving the Marlins an 8-6 advantage going into the top of the 9th inning.
On to save the game came David Robertson who made quick work of the Tigers to close out the game. Robertson worked his magic with his knuckle-curve and pitched a flawless 9th with 1 strikeout to boot. Robertson brought down his already impressive ERA to 2.00 and showed just why the Marlins needed a big time closer and how different it can be at the end of games.
Robertson recorded his 15th save and Marlins brass could give themselves a pat on the back with some of the bullpen security they gave the team with their trade deadline deals. If the deadline passes without another pen addition Marlins fans can be assured of one thing, they will be able to rest a lot easier come the 9th inning with Robertson in control of the ball. This will prove to be especially important as they head into their gauntlet August schedule.
