Miami Marlins improve an area of need with a signing
Mychal Givens will bring his experience to The Fish's bullpen
The bullpen is a serious area of need for the Miami Marlins, with some top arms moving to the rotation. luckily The Fish took some action recently. Hopefully the rotation will help the bullpen, by not forcing it to be overloaded. The action that was taken by Peter Bendix, was signing former shutdown reliever Mychal Givens to a Minor League deal.
The Miami Marlins signed Mychal Givens to a Minor League deal.
Mychal Givens pitched from 2015 to 2020 with the Baltimore Orioles. From 2015 to 2019, he produced a 3.40 ERA/3.44 FIP, with 10.8 K/9 and 3.4 BB/9 in 284 games and 323.0 innings pitched. He split 2020 between Baltimore and the Colorado Rockies....he wasn't as good then, as he produced a 3.63 ERA/5.47 FIP, with 10.1 K/9 and 4.0 BB/9, in 22 games and 22.1 innings pitched.
It's gotten worse for Givens since then unfortunately. From 2022 to 2023 he pitched for quite a few teams. The righty pitched for the Colorado Rockies, Cincinnati Reds, Chicago Cubs, New York Mets and once again the Baltimore Orioles. During that time he produced a more mediocre 3.64 ERA/4.34 FIP, with 9.8 K/9 and 4.5 BB/9 in 119 games and 116.1 innings pitched.
One thing that you can see throughout Mychal Givens' career, is his terrible or at least below average control. This is something that is worrying going forward, as it's unclear if he can improve it going forward. He is currently 33 years old, so there is a chance that he can improve of course. However, it's definitely a big reason why he's currently on a Minor League deal.
Of course, the Miami Marlins don't really need Givens to be an elite arm. If he can simply be a decent depth arm, he can do that. He also does have some upside. The strikeout rate has typically been great and he has pretty decent career numbers. I expect Givens to ultimately make it to the Major League team this season and hopefully produce some decent results. A depth signing at least is a good deal for The Fish.
