It was already an issue... first, we saw an injury happen with Edward Cabrera and now it's happening with Eury Perez. The only thing that isn't negative about all of this, is that it isn't affecting Opening Day. So what now? How bad is this? How long will Eury be out for?
Eury Perez is the latest injured Miami Marlins starting pitcher.
Eury Perez is supposed to be the Miami Marlins ace of the future. An elite arm who can be a perennial NL Cy Young award contender. Having been there at the park for his debut, I can honestly say that he's a true elite pitcher and it's amazing that The Fish have him. It's why I'm especially upset to hear the latest news about him.
Eury broke a nail on his right hand's middle finger yesterday. Manager Skip Schumaker had this to say (fom the linked above MLB.com article):
“That's the problem. It's tough to build up when he has the fingernail, and it's 14 pitches, so obviously not ideal when you're trying to get to the 70-or-so pitch mark. We needed him to bulk up today, and didn't happen. So try to figure out what's going on and make sure he can build up.”
Interestingly, Eury has been dealing with nail issues for all of Spring Training, relying on his four-seam fast ball and curveball, because his changeup was causing the issue to re-aggravate. Frustratingly, we don't know how long this issue will bother him. We also don't know if he will require a stint on the injured list.
I googled the recovery time for a broken fingernail and it seems to go from 7 to 10 days, to as long as 4 to 6 months. Based on what we know so far, I don't really see why it would take months. My hope is that he won't need longer than a month to recover from this injury.
Eury Perez is a key member of the Miami Marlins rotation and we need him back and healthy as soon as possible. We will likely find out more about the timeline of his recovery in the near future.
