Miami Marlins shift up some arms due to the losing streak
The Fish are trying to shake up the bullpen after a terrible start to the season
Losing four straight games was pretty shocking for the Miami Marlins. It hasn't been helped by the bullpen's performance, and it looks like that's what management thinks as well. Shaking up the 'pen sounds like a good idea, though I'm not sure that the team has enough arms to do that. External additions might have been better, but we have this as the current move to address the problem.
Miami Marlins shake up the bullpen once again to change the course of the season.
I don't think that it's a mystery that the Miami Marlins bullpen has been atrocious over the losing streak to start the season. The change made so far was demoting Vladimir Gutierrez back down to the Minor Leagues. Gutierrez didn't have a particularly memorable career to this point. He pitched for the Cincinnati Reds from 2021-2022. He produced a 5.44 ERA/5.61 FIP, with 7.0 K/9 and 4.2 BB/9 in 32 games and 150.2 innings pitched.
Gutierrez only appeared in one game for the Miami Marlins this season. He produced a 6.75 ERA/6.26 FIP, with 9.0 K/9 and 4.5 BB/9 in 4.0 innings pitched. It was a VERY short sample size, but the results were not good. The ERA/FIP were terrible, the strikeout rate was pretty good, the walk rate was below average. Again, we're talking about only 4 innings though.
So who is replacing righty Vladimir Gutierrez on the roster? 31 year old lefty Kent Emanuel is taking Gutierrez's spot on the roster. Emanuel last pitched in 2021 for the Houston Astros. That season, he produced a 2.55 ERA/5.49 FIP, with 6.6 K/9 and 2.0 BB/9 in 10 games and 17.2 innings pitched. Nothing about that performance was impressive, other than the ERA. Of course, based on the small sample size and the FIP appears to be a fluke.
Do I expect Kent Emanuel to to be an upgrade over Vladimir Gutierrez? Not really. I do hope that he'll be better than expected, but it certainly looks like that external additions may be a necessity at this point. The bullpen could play a big role in the Miami Marlins not making the playoffs this season.
