Miami Marlins snag several players in Rule 5 MiLB draft

The Miami Marlins had a pretty solid Rule 5 draft, as they added players to their thin minor league system and didn't loose much. The Marlins didn't select any major leaguers but did add several minor league players for that portion of the draft. The Marlins minor league, especially AAA squad, is very thin on talent and players as many left in free agency, so this was a good move by Bendix and an opportunity to replenish the roster with more talent.

The Marlins added several players in the Rule 5 draft

Yeral Martinez - 1B, OF

The Marlins added a handful of guys at varying levels, who will look to move up in the system, and will have plenty of chances to do so this year. Yeral Martinez was one name selected and he was previously a selection of the New York Mets. Martinez has spent 3 years in the minors and the first two were in rookie ball. He hit a paltry .116 his first season in rookie ball in 2019 with just over 100 plate appearances. He did much better the following year, hitting .230 with 5 home runs and 13 RBI with a .718 OPS and in only 99 plate appearances.

That was a huge improvement for him compared to the one prior and he earned a promotion to single A ball the 2023 season. Martinez played for Port St. Lucie last year and had 314 plate appearances and he continued to improve in single A ball hitting .239 with 9 home runs, 42 RBI, 12 stolen bases, and a .727 OPS. Martinez is a solid left handed hitter who could see some time in AA this season.

The Marlins add depth in their Minor Leagues

Julio Dilone - relief pitcher

The Marlins also added bullpen righty Julio Dilone in the Rule 5 draft. Dilone is a former Seattle Mariners minor leaguer and will be 24 next season. Dilone has pitched for 3 years, and has been pretty decent except for this past season where he posted a 9.00 ERA over 18 innings. Dilone has thrown no more than 18 innings in each of his three seasons, and has increased his ERA each year, which is not a good sign. He has been stuck in rookie ball, and for good reason, but perhaps he gets some movement in the Marlins system.

Adam Laskey - relief pitcher

The Miami Marlins added another relief pitcher in Adam Laskey in the draft. He was originally selected in the 31st round in 2016 by the San Francisco Giants. Laskey has started to do very well this year, a trend they hope continues. In the Arizona Fall League he gave up 1 run over 9 innings and in the summer he had a 3.14 ERA in single A ball over 48 innings. My guess is Bendix is filling out the minor league rosters, especially in the bullpen as the Marlins have called up multiple players over the past year. Laskey has a lifetime 4.59 ERA and a 1.5 WHIP, so he has some potential.
