The Miami Marlins added a new closer and improved the bullpen further as well. The Trade Deadline is very close, but Kim Ng is doing her job very well so far. What can The Fish do to improve next? Add a big bat? Improve the bullpen further? Maybe add starting pitching? I suggested acquiring an "inning-eating" starting pitcher, and my wish might become a reality...

The Miami Marlins are targeting Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Michael Lorenzen.

The Fish need starting pitching help. That's not a sentence that I'd thought that I'd ever write this season, but yet here I am doing just that. The Miami Marlins need starting pitching depth and that can be provided very well by an "inning-eating" starting pitcher.

Kim Ng is interested in acquiring Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Michael Lorenzen. Detroit isn't going to the playoffs this season, so are naturally shopping their upcoming free agents. One such free agent is the aforementioned Michael Lorenzen. The starting pitcher actually has an impressive 2.0 WAR so far this season.

The 31 year old also has a 3.58 ERA/3.89 FIP, with 7.1 K/9 and 2.3 BB/9 in 18 games and 105.2 innings pitched. The FIP and K/9 aren't jumping off the page as impressive, but what's important is that he has a decent ERA and that's the results that The Fish definitely need. Having someone to eat up innings would make a world of difference for this young but very talented team.

Michael Lorenzen has actually spent almost all of his career with the Cincinnati Reds. He has a 4.07 ERA/4.27 FIP, with 7.7 K/9 and 3.7 BB/9 for them from 20115 to 2021. He had 7.7 K/9 and 3.7 BB/9. Lorenzen put up these numbers in 295 games and 473.1 innings pitched. This makes him more of an inning eater than an ace, and expecting top of the rotation production from his is not very wise to say the least.

Lorenzen moved on to the Los Angeles Angels in 2022, and posted a 4.24 ERA/4.31 FIP, with 7.8 K/9 and 4.1 BB/9 in 18 games and 97.2 innings pitched.
