New Miami Marlin Deyvison De Los Santos has an eerily similar profile to Pete Alonso
No franchise has risen faster in MLB's Farm system rankings than the Miami Marlins. A flurry of deals at the trade deadline has helped Miami rise from 29th (out of 30 teams) to 15th. While there is still work to be done, perhaps in the form of a Jesus Luzardo deal this offseason, the club seems well on its way to a proper rebuild.
Interestingly, one new Marlins shares a shockingly similar minor profile to another NL East superstar. Is it possible that first baseman Deyvison De Los Santos could be the next version of New York Mets All-Star Pete Alonso?
Let's begin with the 1B comp. Pete Alonso has been the premier power hitter in baseball since his debut in 2019. In fact, his 218 blasts during that time narrowly edges out superstar Aaron Judge for the most since 2019. Alonso is also a four-time MLB All-Star, a former NL Rookie of the Year (2019), and a two-time home run derby champion.
New York's Polar Bear also posts stellar exit velocity numbers year after year. While his leaves something to be desired in terms of batting average (he is a career .250 hitter), his power is something to be feared.
De Los Santos is establishing himself as a mirror image of Alonso. His 33 homers this season pace all of the minor leagues. His exit velocity numbers are unreal. And he has quickly become a major asset for Miami.
The slugger's .292 batting average is nearly identical to Alonso's .290 career minor league mark. While DLS's .314 average in 2024 gives the Marlins hope that he could become a more dangerous contact hitter, the emphasis for both players is their massive power potential.
De Los Santos' 33 homers are also eerily similar to Alonso's MiLB career-best mark of 36 in 2018. The two powerhouse 1B profiles make this an easy comparison. Here's hoping Miami's new top prospect can make a similar impact at the major league level.
