We have an update on injured Miami Marlins ace Sandy Alcantara. The 2022 National League Cy Young award winner will not pitch this season, with Jesus Luzardo pitching on Opening Day instead. We have to wait for the 2025 season to see the ace again, but there are plenty of good news from the latest report.

Miami Marlins ace Sandy Alcantara has started his long road to recovery.

Sandy Alcantara has been one of the greatest starting pitchers in Miami Marlins history. He pitched for The Fish from 2018. From 2018 to 2021, Sandy produced a solid 3.48 ERA, with a slightly underwhelming 4.01 FIP. He had a 7.9 K/9 and 3.2 BB/9 along the way in the 78 games and 479.0 innings pitched.

Sandy took it all to the next level in 2022. That season, he produced a 2.28 ERA/2.99 FIP, with 8.1 K/9 and 2.0 BB/9, in 32 games and 228.2 innings pitched. That was an amazing performance that led to him being worth a Major League leading 7.8 WAR. It was a surprise when he didn't come close to the results in 2023. That season he produced a 4.14 ERA/4.03 FIP, with 7.4 K/9 and 2.3 BB/9 in 28 games and 184.2 innings pitched.

Sandy ended up needing Tommy John Surgery after the season. So what is the good update on the ace? He finally threw for the first time a couple of days ago. He threw on flat ground at a distance of 40 feet, with his pitches being at 50 mph. Here's what he had to say about this:

"Last night, I can't even sleep, thinking that I have to be here, be ready to throw. Today was a great moment for me, throw a baseball for the first time since six months, so everything feels good. Hopefully, I've just got to keep doing everything I can to get ready and back as soon as I can. So I think I've just got to be patient and positive."

Manager Skip Schumaker says that Sandy Alcantara is ahead of schedule in his return from TJS. This is great news and though he is extremely unlikely to pitch this season, he should be back by Opening Day in 2025. Sandy's Beach will be open for business once again.
