Should the Miami Marlins Cash In on the Angels Yard Sale?
The Angels are putting up some big names for waivers claim, the Marlins should take advantage
The Miami Marlins were very active at the deadline to try and make a playoff push. They added some key pieces on offense and an average relief pitcher and a project pitcher. The arms they added were not turn-key players and they need time to work with them and make them better than their current production. The Marlins still however are missing the arm they needed to add, and now might be a great opportunity to do so with the Angels yard sale of waivers players, should the Marlins dive in and grab one? I think they have to grab one or two.
The Marlins pen has had a subpar August and they often gave up the lead or worse, made the opposing teams lead insurmountable. They desperately need to add a bullpen arm that can more consistently hold opposing teams at bay. The Angels have placed Reynaldo Lopez on waivers, should the Marlins claim him? Let’s take a look at his stats.
Lopez has a 3.86 ERA combined between Anaheim and the Chicago White Sox. Since being added to the Angels Lopez has shown out, posting a 2.31 ERA over 12 appearances and 11.2 innings. Lopez has 2 saves and only allowed 3 runs while striking out 19 in those 11.2 innings of work, most Marlins relievers have given up as many or more runs in a single appearance this month. To me it seems simple, they need to make Lopez a priority and demote one of the current relief pitchers.
In different appearances Lopez has shut out Toronto, Atlanta, Houston, Texas, and Cincinnati, all top talent teams and all teams the Marlins have struggled against in relief appearances. Just to add to the appeal, Lopez pitched 1.2 innings of shutout ball against the Braves and struck out 3 while not giving up a single hit. The Marlins need that out of the pen and if they can acquire him they should. I would love it if they can get both Lopez and Renfroe but if only one player I would opt for Lopez.
