Peter Bendix loves bringing in his ex-Tampa Bay Rays players to the Miami Marlins. The latest in the line of acquisitions is none other than RHP Yonny Chirinos. Chirinos was signed to a Minor League deal, after spending last season with the Atlanta Braves. Will he actually help the team however? Is there any untapped potential?
Yonny Chirinos is the newest member of the Miami Marlins pitching depth.
Pitching depth is one of the most important things that a team can have. Peter Bendix has done a good job in building up The Fish's depth, and Yonny Chirinos is just the latest addition to that mix. Chirinos is a 30 year old righty, who had an impressive debut back in 2018 with Tampa. He produced a 3.51 ERA/3.51 FIP, with 7.5 K/9 and 2.5 BB/9. He did this in 18 games (7 starts) and 89.2 innings pitched.
Yonny followed that up in 2019 with a 3.85 ERA/4.44 FIP, with 7.7 K/9 and 1.9 BB/9 in 26 games (18 starts) in 133.1 innings pitched. This was slightly worse, but was still showing that he had good control and was still providing solid results. The shortened 2020 season was all over the place for Chirinos. He produced a great 2.38 ERA, but had a poor 5.31 FIP, with 7.9 K/9 and 3.2 BB/9.
Things went horribly awry for the pitcher after the 2020 season. He underwent Tommy John Surgery and then fractured his elbow during his recovery process. He finally made his return in 2022, when he produced a 0.00 ERA/2.25 FIP, with 7.7 K/9 and 1.3 BB/9 in 2 games (1 start) and just 7 innings of work. It was however very promising. Chirinos split 2023 between Tampa Bay and Atlanta, producing a disappointing 5.40 ERA/5.43 FIP, with 5.6 K/9 and 2.9 BB/9, in 20 games (9 starts) and 85 innings pitched.
Peter Bendix brought in a talented pitcher for depth. I wouldn't be surprised if Yonny Chirinos ends up in the back of the rotation, or as a solid long reliever receiving spot starts from time to time.
