Spring Training is on the way and there are high hopes for the upcoming season ahead. I'm still pointing out that the Miami Marlins need a DH in the meantime. Another thing that concerns us in Spring Training is a competition for two rotation spots. How is that going to go? It makes sense to take a look...

The Miami Marlin are having an internal competition for the two bottom rotation spots

Some Miami Marlins rotation spots have already been set. The top three spots belong to Eury Perez, Jesus Luzardo and Braxton Garrett. The latter is however dealing with a potential injury. With the top three set, it's the last two spots in the rotation that are up for grabs. The presumptive favorites are Trevor Rogers and Edward Cabrera of course.

Trevor was amazing in 2021, producing a 2.64 ERA/2.55 FIP, with 10.6 K/9 and 3.1 BB/9 in 25 games and 133.0 innings pitched. Rogers was unable to stay healthy in the subsequent years, pitching to a combined 5.26 ERA/4.32 FIP, with 9.0 K/9 and 3.7 BB/9, in 27 games and 125.0 innings pitched.

I'm pretty positive that Trevor Rogers will end up winning a rotation spot this Spring. Edward Cabrera has been mentioned in trade scenarios, but has a pretty solid 4.01 ERA4.78 FIP, with 10.1 K/9 and 5.4 BB/9 in 43 games and 197.2 innings pitched, over the last three years. He should end up with a spot too, unless he's going to be traded of course.

Ryan Weathers is apparently still a candidate, despite a career 5.88 ERA/5.64 FIP, with 6.8 K/9 and 3.6 BB/9, in 46 games and 156.0 innings pitched. Catcher Nick Fortes has been high on him so far:

“He looked good. His changeup looked really, really good. [He] had some really good action. [The] fastball was getting on guys, it looked like. His sinker had some good action as well. We were kind of pushing his changeup a little bit more, because he's been working on it. It looked pretty good.”

Has the 24 year old former #7 pick by the San Diego Padres finally got his stuff right? What about another former top prospect Max Meyer? He debuted back in 2022 and produced just a 7.50 ERA/6.45 FIP, with an impressive 9.0 K/9 and 3.00 BB/9 in 2 games and 6.0 innings pitched in 2022. Meyer is coming back from Tommy John Surgery, but the potential is there. Other options are mentioned, but I can only see one of these two getting the spots away from Rogers and Cabrera...as unlikely as that may be.
