The Miami Marlins have a resolution on designated for assignment pitcher Daniel Castano. There's also news on former Fish first baseman Jesus Aguilar. This has been a busy week for The Fish, with depth signings of multiple pitchers in recent days. With the World Baseball Classic coming up and Spring Training only a month away as well, it looks to be a busy few weeks for the Miami Marlins that are on their way. Let's look at some of the news...
Miami Marlins have a resolution on a designated for assignment pitcher.
The Miami Marlins finally received some resolution on Daniel Castano. Castano had a brief career with The Fish from 2020 to 2022. He produced a 3.03 ERA/4.81 FIP in 7 games, 6 starts and 29.2 innings in 2020. He also had 3.6 K/9 and 3.3 B/9. In 2021, he produced a 4.87 ERA/5.14 FIP with 5.8 K/9 and 3.5 BB/9 in 5 games, 4 starts and 20.1 innings pitched. In 2022 the swingman delivered a 4.04 ERA/4.74 FIP with 5.0 K/9 and 2.3 BB/9 in 10 games, 7 starts and 35.2 innings. Castano was designated for assignment and has now been outrighted to the Minor Leagues.
Do you remember Jesus Aguilar? The first baseman played for the Miami Marlins from 2020 to 2022. He batted .277/.352/.457 in the shortened 2020 season. He then batted .261/.329/.459 in 131 games and 449 AB in 2021. He also had 22 home runs and 93 RBI. In 2022 he batted .236/.386/.388 with 15 home runs and 49 RBI in 113 games and 415 AB. He clearly wasn't that good for the Miami Marlins, so he never got to finish the season with the team. Aguilar has now signed with the Oakland Athletics on a one-year deal. It's unlikely that he will produce much but it's fascinating to see a former player's next career step.
The Miami Marlins still need to acquire bullpen help as well as potentially do a little bit more for the lineup. I'm intrigued to se how the defensive alighnment will work out this upcoming season as well.
