Will Tanner Scott succeed as the new Miami Marlins closer?
The Miami Marlins recently made a change at closer. The big question of course is whether The Fish can still make the playoffs. Will Tanner Scott taking over for David Robertson help The Fish in this endeavor? Can Tanner hold down the fort that some others were unable to do this season? Wwe'll find out in the coming weeks, but for now we can at least make some hopeful projections.
The Miami Marlins will hope that Tanner Scott can deliver as the new closer.
David Robertson has been an absolute disaster as the Miami Marlins closer. Perhaps it could've been predicted based on the discrepancy in his ERA (2.05) and FIP (3.59), with the New York Mets prior to his trade to The Fish. He of course has been far worse with The Fish, delivering a 7.20 ERA/6.17 FIP and blowing 3 saves in just 10 innings so far. Will Tanner Scott be able to hold on to the role that neither Robertson or A.J. Puk could hold on to?
Tanner Scott has sadly been wildly unpredictable throughout his career. He spent most of his career with the Baltimore Orioles (2017-2021). During that time, he produced a 4.73 ERA/4.00 FIP, with 12.0 K/9 and 5.5 BB/9. As you can see, he had an elite strikeout rate but a very high walk rate. He also didn't have an impressive ERA and FIP. He moved on to the Miami Marlins after the 2021 season.
How did Tanner Scott perform with The Fish so far? In 2022, he had a 4.31 ERA/3.67 FIP, with 12.9 K/9 and 6.6 BB/9 in 67 games and 62.2 innings pitched. Once again the strikeout rate was impressive, but the walk rate was not. In fact it was downright horrible. The ERA was pretty bad as well. The FIP however was promising.
2023 has been going excellent so far for Tanner Scott. He has a 2.55 ERA/2.24 FIP, with 12.5 K/9 and 3.5 BB/9 in 59 games and 60.0 innings pitched. Can he keep this up? It's obvious that he's having better control this season. If he can keep the walks low, he can definitely be an elite closer going forward.
