Tommy Hutton just leapt to the front of next Miami Marlins Legends Hall of Fame class

Thirty-four seasons, twenty-eight with Tommy. Miami's most beloved broadcaster has been one of the franchises few constants and deserves to be immortalized ASAP.

Turns out there aren't a ton of photos of Miami Marlins great Tommy Hutton.

Then again, you could just find a photo of just about anything significant that ever happened to the franchise since 1997. Because chances are, Hutton was on the mic expressing an anecdote or insight about it. Or perhaps, when listeners were fortunate enough, even a signature rant.

There have been precious few constants for fans in Miami Marlins history. You don't need me to laundry list the reasons, or give you an overview of the tumultuous tenure of Major League Baseball in South Florida. Not today anyway. Yet there's no question that Hutton, employed by the organization for twenty-eight seasons as of this year, has been one of them.

Monday afternoon, word broke that the 2026 season will be Hutton's last. Eighty years young, the time has apparently come to retire.

It really has been a staggering tenure for a franchise with so much change. Honestly the only thing more surprising than Miami employing someone in such a public facing role for nearly three decades is that they ever let him go for that brief stretch in the first place (see Marlins Broadcasting Dark Ages 2016-2017). Bringing him back in 2018 remains one of the better decisions made in the Sherman era.

And as is so often the case, one good decision clears the way for another:

Put Tommy Hutton into the Miami Marlins Legends Hall of Fame. ASAP.

Had it not been for a string of sick days and snow days out here at the Marlin Maniac home offices heading into this year's Marlins Fanfest, you would have been treated to an article advocating Hutton's 2026 Legends candidacy. Instead, you just got the case for Dave Dombrowski, and the Hutton piece (and one or two others) got pushed to the September schedule when this year's crop, Josh Beckett and Dontrelle Willis go in.

Well, suffice it to say today's news changes that timetable once again. In the Dombrowski article, it was argued that there is no Marlins Hall of Fame without him. Nearly identical language can be used to describe Hutton, the man responsible for communicating so much of that history to generations of Marlins fans. Tributes are already pouring in. In The Miami Herald. From MLB.com. On FishonFirst. This humble addition is not the first and will be far from the last.

While I can't speak for anyone but myself, I can do basic math. Chances are pretty good Hutton played a key role in inspiring a passion for baseball in the majority of the authors included here.

The same is true of countless Marlins fans. Thus immortalizing Tommy Hutton in the next Legends Hall of Fame class is a no-brainer for Miami's front office.

The only question is whether they even wait for 2027 to do it. Pretty sure there are no rules against making a late addition to the 2026 field.

Until then? Savor every moment of airtime this season. Possibly spam the Marlins social feeds to request they sign long-time Hutton partner Rich Waltz to a one-game contract in September. Keep your fingers crossed for at least one incredulous, rant-inducing moment.

Most importantly though, just say this. Thanks, Tommy.
