The Miami Marlins had a busy weekend and there are trade rumors continuously circulating. We now have some good news to look forward to for the next series against the Cincinnati Reds. Top catching prospect Agustin Ramirez is finally up to the Major League team. Catcher Rob Brantly was called up as an injury-fill in, and is now injured. This is why Agustin is now up to replace him.
Big roster move by the Miami Marlins for the Cincinnati series.
Rob Brantly didn't do anything of note for the Miami Marlins. He batted .600/.600/.600, with no home runs and 1 RBI in 2 games and 5 AB this season. This looks pretty impressive production by the 35 year old. There are however bad news to remember about this. He has no real track record of success. He batted a poor .227/.287/.325 for his career.
I'm excited to see what Agustin Ramirez can offer to the team. He hasn't been that great in AAA this season so far. He batted .258/.320/.500 for AAA Jacksonville this season. He also has 3 home runs and 12 RBI in 18 games and 66 AB. It's not that impressive, but he did better last season. He batted .290/.372/.570 in AA for the New York Yankees. He then batted .224/.328/.365 for them in AAA, before moving on to The Fish. With The Fish's AAA team in Jacksonville, he batted .262/.358/.447.
Agustin Ramirez has a lot of power, which makes me think that his future can still be bright at the Major League level. There are some downsides however, he's not much of a defender, with his defense at catcher not particularly regarded. It makes me think that his future will ultimately be at either DH or first base. DH seems especially as a fitting position for the power hitter.
I'm very excited to see what Agustin Ramirez can offer the Miami Marlins this season, but let's not forget that there are growing pains for rookies. The 23 year old may need time to become the player that he's been projected to be. It'll be fun to watch what he does.
