The Miami Marlins are finally doing some trading and have at least some stars to look forward to for the 2025 season. That said, there are some interesting trade targets out there that of course The Fish won't be pursuing. The Chicago White Sox are open to trading CF Luis Robert Jr. and the San Diego Padres are shopping starting pitcher Dylan Cease.
It's a bit sad that the Miami Marlins won't be acquiring these sluggers.
Now, it's of course obvious that the Miami Marlins might not really need to pursue these players. Dylan Cease is a free agent after the 2025 season. Luis Robert Jr. is a free agent after the 2027 season, that is if his 2026 and 2027 team options end up being picked up. That is of cours enot guaranteed, though is predictable based on his production so far.
Luis Robert Jr. has a career .267/.316/.474 batting line from the 2020 season through last season. He does however have a reputation for being quite a bit injury-prone. His best season came in 2023, when he batted .264/.315/.542 with 38 home runs and 80 RBI in 145 games and 546 AB. He was worth 5.0 WAR. They probably should've traded him after the season, as the 2024 season didn't go as planned. He batted .224/.278/.379, with 14 home runs and 35 RBI in 100 games and 393 AB. He was worth 1.4 WAR. The White Sox will clearly want a lot in return, so I kind of see how The Fish will probably not want to give any prospects up for him.
Dylan Cease looks like a less interesting target. He's a free agent after the 2025 season, and has pitched to a 3.47 ERA/3.10 FIP, with 10.6 K/9 and 3.1 BB/9 in 33 games and 189.1 innings pitched. He was worth 4.2 WAR. His best season came in 2022, when he pitched to a 2.20 ERA/3.10 FIP, with 11.1 K/9 and 3.8 BB/9, in 32 games and 184.0 innings pitched.
I understand why the Miami Marlins won't pursue Dylan Cease, but I still can't deny that there is at least some sense in looking at Luis Robert Jr., if the price is right of course, The Fish do need out field help.
