Will the Miami Marlins ever have a payroll that approaches the top half of the league, and if not, why should fans want you to own the team?
Haha, not even with a salary cap. And if the league were to put in a salary floor to go with it? To quote South Florida's poet laureate Flo Rida, we'd be low, low. low, low, low, low, low, low.
Enough about money I'll never be spending though. I want to speak to the last part of your question, and cycle back a bit to that first one too if I may. All this talk of fans' opinions, concern about the fans, what about the fans. You all seem to laboring under the delusion I care about them.
I don't.
I'm speaking to Miami Marlins fans directly now. The ones who have stuck with this team through multiple rebuilds. In other words, the ones who complain the loudest.
I don't just own the Marlins. I own YOU.
Extend Sandy. Trade Sandy. Make the playoffs. Tank for the the most lottery balls. Get the No. 1 pick, fall on our face and pick 7th. It doesn't matter. You are all going to spend the same amount of money anyway. After all that has happened to you, and you're still here? You still care? All that makes you is a known commodity. You're sheep, and there aren't enough of you to effect change even if you wanted to. Forget bah-humbug. To you all, I just say baaaaaaaaaaaa.
No, all I care about now are the future Marlins fans. The people who will come out and buy tickets, more tickets than you ever did, once the team is good. Once the team is the hip, shiny, trendy thing to do in South Florida. When people come out to loanDepot to be seen, not just to see a team. That's who this rebuild is for, and if it doesn't work, that's who the next rebuild will be for.
All of you existing fans that are complaining about this? Look in a mirror. If you had spent more, consistently, way back when? Had shown up just because? I either wouldn't be here right now, or would have at least had some investors who were interested in heavier spending.
Anyway, we have a team this year- most cities don't. Only twenty-nine others do, in fact! We might not do much winning, but we're a cheaper date than the Heat and the Panthers. Come on out and enjoy your 2025 Miami Marlins. It might not be winning baseball, but it is still baseball.
