This off-season has so far been more about what Miami Marlins rivals teams will do, then what the team will. Moves have been suggested for The Fish by MLB.com, but they don't really make much sense and are unlikely to actually happen. MLB.com now has an interesting idea about where top free agent Juan Soto will actually go. It certainly looks like they expect the New York Mets to ultimately sign him.
Will Miami Marlins rivals sign Juan Soto this off-season?
MLB.com expects the Boston Red Sox and the New York Mets to be the frontrunners for Juan Soto. The Toronto Blue Jays are expected to finish third in the running, and the New York Yankees to finish fourth. This is just plain ridiculous on every possible level.
I don't understand why the Toronto Blue Jays are even after Soto. They don't even have a playoff team, and their best player is likely on his way out in free agency next off-season. They need to lock him up first and figure out how to improve the roster. I don't see them having enough money to both sign Soto and adding the many other players that they badly need.
There's no way that Toronto will finish behind the New York Yankees in the running for Juan Soto. The incumbents are certainly going to go all out, and I find it unbelieveable that they will let him go. I don't see Boston having much of a chance either. They haven't spent in years and I find it laughable to believe that they will finally do so this off-season. They need starting pitching and will focus on that, there's no way that they're signing Soto.
It will ultimately come down to the two New York teams. Will Juan Soto stay with the New York Yankees? Or downgrade to the New York Mets? Steve Cohen will surely be willing to pay up, so I agree with MLB.com that the Mets are one of the favorites. It's certainly not Boston though. I just wish that the Miami Marlins were actually in the mix for him.
