MLB.com had an interesting article recently that made me really think. It pertains to former Miami Marlins RF Giancarlo Stanton. The slugger had quite a career with The Fish. The highlight of which is of course his epic 2017 season, which culminated with the NL MVP award. It's debatable if he will get into the MLB Hall of Fame, but he sure had that season. The 2015 season could've been great too if Brett Anderson hadn't injured him by accident.
Former Miami Marlins RF Giancarlo Stanton could've won another MVP.
Giancarlo Stanton had an interesting career with the Miami Marlins didn't he? He won the NL MVP award in 2017, when he batted .281/.376/.631, with 59 home runs and 132 RBI in 159 games and 597 AB. He almost hit 60! I remember following that season and hoping that he would beat the non-steroid home run record. Unfortunately, that was not to be and he was traded after the season.
Personally, I believe that with his injury history and propensity for strikeouts, it was always smarter to trade him rathe rthan extend him. Of course, The Fish did the dumbest thing possible, by extending him first with a No-Trade Clause and then having to trade him as a salary dump, instead of receiving a haul for him in a trade which he couldn't have controlled prior to the extension.
Anyway, back to that 2015 season, Giancarlo Stanton was injured by a Brett Anderson pitch, but before that he was having a very promising season. He was batting .265/.346/.606, with 27 home runs and 67 RBI in 74 games and 279 AB. This was amazing production, that had he stayed healthy probably have led to 50+ home runs. With some better luck, maybe he could've even hit those 60 home runs.
The 2015 season could've been an epic one for Giancarlo Stanton, and it's pretty sad that it didn't happen for him and the Miami Marlins. That's definitely yet another what-if in the history of the team. I do wish Stanton luck as he finishes out his career with the New York Yankees.
