April/May Round Up: Greensboro Grasshoppers
Last but not least is Greensboro, which is pretty barren in prospects. A reminder that all numbers for hitters are park adjusted (but not pitchers). What this also means is that, on a monthly basis, applying park factors won’t change much of the stats because of how small they are. But it will change the yearly stats because they are a larger sample. This is why you’ll see things like Logan Morrison’s season BABIP being higher than both his April and May BABIP. And some misc Greensboro news: Marcell Ozuna was placed in the disabled list after only six games. [...]
The Sanchez-Morrison Dilemma
Recently, FanGraphs writer and friend of the Maniac Joe Pawlikowski wrote an interesting article on the “problem” the Marlins have regarding first base. Right now, Gaby Sanchez is the man, and he’s looking like it. Going into the season, we would have taken a .340-ish wOBA performance from Sanchez, but after a slide took his slash line to .266/.344/.411 on June 5, he has ripped through opposing pitchers to the tune of .400/.449/.625, with four homers, four doubles, eight walks, and only nine strikeouts. This has brought him to a .305/.375/.474 line for the year, good for a .376 wOBA [...]
How should the Marlins have fixed the pen?
Yes, we all know that the Marlins bullpen has sucked this year. Is anyone all that surprised? Not particularly, given the ragtag crew that the team brought in this offseason to pitch the high leverage innings. What has come as a surprise to me is the outrage of Marlins fans about how the bullpen situation has been handled. This particular FanPost on FishStripes got me thinking about this. Why is it that fans complain about the way a team is built only after the team struggles? Each year, the Marlins build their bullpen in the same fashion: combine younger players [...]
Free Rick VandenHurk
On Friday, we got the news that the Marlins designated James Houser for assignment and replaced him on the roster with former bullpen punching bag Jose Veras. The team had DFA’d Veras earlier in the year for being terrible (6 1/3 IP, 8 K, 6 BB, 1 HR), but apparently his performance in the minors has convinced the Fish to bring him back up to the bigs to help the bullpen. On the same day, a few other Marlins bloggers and I were discussing the more ideal solution to this problem on Twitter: free Rick VandenHurk. The guys at Marlin [...]
On Fredi and Bobby
Editor’s Note: Again fellow Maniacs, I apologize for the extended hiatus from the site. I promise that I will work hard this month to rebuild the brand that is Marlin Maniac once more! -MJ I perked up when the news of Fredi Gonzalez’ firing came out. It was interesting timing, as the Marlins had won the previous evening. However, the move was quite unsurprising, as owner Jeffrey Loria had been wanting to fire Gonzalez since the end of last season. Now, the news has come out that former New York Mets manager Bobby Valentine is scheduled to be hired within [...]
Programming Note
Sorry Maniacs, but I have been indisposed due to work and a generally hectic schedule. By the end of the week, I should be back on my feet, but for the time being I also am working on something very cool and very Marlins-related. Look out for the Florida Marlins Trade Deadline Primer coming in the next month, which will feature work by yours truly.
April/May Round Up: Jacksonville Suns
Now time to move onto your AA affiliate, which is also where the vast majority of our guys are, including one name in particular who likely won’t be around for the next monthly installment. A reminder that all numbers for hitters are park adjusted (but not pitchers). What this also means is that, on a monthly basis, applying park factors won’t change much of the stats because of how small they are. But it will change the yearly stats because they are a larger sample. This is why you’ll see things like Logan Morrison’s season BABIP being higher than both [...]
The Stanton Arrival Guide: Current Playing Time
Yesterday night, Mike Stanton made his major league debut and had a decent night, picking up three singles in five PA. None of the singles were all that impressive, as two of them were of the infield variety, while the third was an opposite field line drive. Just as important as how Stanton did is how much time will Stanton be afforded to do his business. In addition, who is going to be the odd man out in the new Marlins outfield alignment. There are a few options to consider, and Eric Seidman of Baseball Prospectus covered them last week. [...]
Marlins/Phillies Live Tweeting
I know that Stephen Strasburg will hog much of the spotlight in tonight’s game with his debut, but the Marlins have their own phenom debuting as well. Mike Stanton will get his first shot tonight against the Philadelphia Phillies, and I’ll be listening and tweeting (I know, not cool) about it all evening. Come join me over at @MarlinManiac!
April/May Round Up: Jupiter Hammerheads
Time to move to Jupiter, where we have a few interesting SP prospects and a lot, lot, lot of under-performing hitters. And some misc JUP news: The Jupiter Hammerheads [...]
