The curious departure of Chris Leroux
(Editor’s Note: John had this article ready in a timely fashion after we lost Chris Leroux to the Pirates. I’m posting it now because it is interesting, but my apologies for having it be untimely. -MJ On Monday, the Marlins designated Chris Leroux for assignment. This was not a move made to clear a room on the 40 man roster; Not only have they still yet to call up somebody, they could also move Chris Coghlan to the 60 day DL to clear a spot. We can assume they made the move now because they recognized they would DFA Leroux [...]
Marlins finally hit injury woes
The latest Marlin to go down to injury is Hanley Ramirez, who has been shut down for the remainder of the year after attempting to struggle through an elbow injury for much of September. With the season almost at a close, this caps off a wild year of injuries for the Fish, the likes of which the team hasn’t seen for some time. Just take a look at the list of names the Marlins have sent to the DL for the season this year: John Baker (out since 06/19, missed 134 possible games) Chris Coghlan (out since 07/26, missed 66 [...]
Marlins sent to the AFL
(Editor’s Note: Now that the minor league seasons have wrapped up, resident Marlins prospect maven John Herold is back to analyze and break down our youngsters. He’ll be dropping by occasionally with his thoughts.) The AFL rosters were announced awhile back. Here’s the list of players the Marlins will be sending (I’ll be going deeper into the numbers for players later, when park factors have been released): Kyle Skipworth is the main name, and it’s rather surprising to see him going. Strike outs and plate discipline are still a massive problem with him, and they barely improved in his second [...]
Logan Morrison patiently waits to strike
More and more people are noticing the amazing first 256 PA of Logan Morrison. FanGraphs prospect maven Bryan Smith responded to a question in today’s prospect chat asking about Morrison and how he compares to other power-light first basemen such as Lyle Overbay and James Loney by saying this: Bryan Smith: Better than good, [his rookie season has] been great. It’s unfair to compare him to those guys, because he has better on-base skills than either. He’s what those guys aspire to be. Though Overbay and Loney are not the most illustrious names in baseball, both are players who have [...]
Contract Crowdsourcing: Uggla results and reaction
Though I only have 23 votes for the Contract Crowdsourcing of Dan Uggla and his potential future extension, I went ahead and decided to close balloting in terms of results and analysis. If you guys would like, you may continue to vote for Uggla’s years and annual average salary (in millions), but this article reflects the votes that I have received so far. Part of the reasoning for closing is the very timely article by the Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson regarding some of the offseason moves on which the Marlins will decide after September. Principle among these decisions is the [...]
Marlins considering offseason catching options
Yesterday, I was discussing how the catching tandem of John Baker and Ronny Paulino has failed the team this season. While injury and ineffectiveness plagued the Marlins’ backstops in 2010, what we should be focused on is how the future will be affected. Recently, Nick Cafardo from the Boston Globe mentioned that the Marlins may have some interest in free agent catcher Victor Martinez, a top target for many other teams as well (H/T MLBTR). I decided to wander over to MLB Trade Rumors and check out some of the available catchers for this offseason to see if anyone could [...]
Catching tandem failed Marlins this season
Before the year started, I previewed the Marlins’ various position situations and gave particularly high praise to the two-headed catching tandem of John Baker and Ronny Paulino. Last season, the Marlins got somewhere along the lines of 3.5 WAR between the two players splitting time, and I projected them to put up similar numbers before the season started. Had this been the case, the Marlins would have done fairly well for themselves. Look how much difference a year can make. With the 2010 campaign almost over, the Marlins have not gotten nearly the production they were expecting from their platoon. [...]
Contract Crowdsourcing: Dan Uggla
This offseason, the Marlins are interested in signing Dan Uggla to an extension to keep him in a Marlins uniform at least through the opening of the new stadium. We’ve heard rumors about how much Danny will be making and how long he’ll be in a Fish uniform, but I’d like to see how the readers perform on this. How well do you think the Marlins will Dan Uggla? Well, there’s an easy way to find out how much Marlins fans think the Fish will fork up for Uggla, and that is to ask them directly, right here at Marlin [...]
Uggla’s odd power season
Dan Uggla is having a fine season for the Marlins this year, as we all know. Since I just discussed his season a bit on last Wednesday, I won’t describe it once again today in a general sense. Instead, I wanted to point out an interesting factor that has brought about this season’s success, a factor that may not bode so well for future seasons. Despite a .224 ISO that stands as the third-best mark of his career and even with his career totals, Uggla’s power in terms of extra bases is actually down this season by a wide margin. [...]
Programming Note
I’ve been absent since late Wednesday, as I have a lot of studying to take care of. I had not mentioned it, but I have moved on to medical school and begun classes recently (this was mentioned over at Call to the Pen). With a major test coming up on Monday, I’ll be unable to produce much stuff this weekend. Once Monday is clear, I’ll be back on the horse, writing as much as I can once more. I apologize for the hiatus.
