Christian Yelich and Marcell Ozuna to get extended this off-season?

In Christian Yelich, Marcell Ozuna, and Giancarlo Stanton, the Miami Marlins may have the best young outfield in baseball. That’s among the reasons they traded prospect Jake Marisnick along with Colin Moran for Jarred Cosart and Enrique Hernandez.

The Marlins hope to keep the nucleus of their team, their outfield, with the team for the long haul. We all know that the Marlins have been making huge plans about a possible extension for star right fielder Giancarlo Stanton, one that could potentially even top the deal Mike Trout got earlier this off-season.

Apparently, the Marlins have bigger plans than just extending Stanton. According to Joe Frisaro of Marlins.com, the team has intentions of trying to extend their entire outfield.

"Miami already has Christian Yelich in left, Marcell Ozuna in center, and Giancarlo Stanton in right. The club may look to sign all three to extensions this offseason."

Of the three, I believe Yelich would be the easiest to resign. Stanton is just two season’s away from reaching free agency and Ozuna is represented by the big time Scott Boras. There likely wouldn’t be much, if at all, of a paycut coming from Ozuna and his heralded agent.

If the Marlins do sign all three of their best position players, the Marlins could then turn their attention to the rotation next off-season. Nathan Eovaldi, Henderson Alvarez, and of course Jose Fernandez would be candidates for extensions next season.

A great sign for Marlins fans is that the team is finally catching up to the rest of baseball about potentially locking up their young players before they get too expensive. If the team wants to compete with a small payroll, this would be the best route for the Marlins to go.
