The Miami Marlins have a historically bad offense. It’s imperative that Bruce Sherman and Kim Ng do something about it in the off-season and fix it, but I’m not very optimistic on what Kim will actually be able to do. We need a lot of help and need to focus on certain positions specifically. Let’s take a look at what they are….

The Miami Marlins need to prioritize fixing a historically bad lineup.

Let’s start from the beginning, catcher. We currently have Jacob Stallings there, but could use an upgrade. We might have one already in Nick Fortes. The catching upgrade is not usually too deep, so the Miami Marlins might just stick with them. First base however needs a clear upgrade. We have Lewin Diaz along with Garrett Cooper there, but Cooper can’t stay healthy and Lewin has been worth negative WAR. It’s usually a “cheap” position to fill, so we should be able to do that in free agency.

The Miami Marlins have second base (Jazz Chisholm Jr.) and third base covered (Joey Wendle). We also have one outfield spot (LF) or DH locked up with Jorge Soler, who I expect a bounceback from. I also think that we should avoid bad spending in centerfield and just give another shot to Jesús Sánchez instead. The marker is just not that good to splurge at the position.

This leaves the Miami Marlins with holes at SS, RF and either LF or DH. Trading Avisail Garcia would be the best idea, but if a bad contract swap isn’t possible then we’re stuck with Kim Ng’s mistake. We can find decent and cheap OF bats in free agency or by trade. I’ll write more in-depth about it closer to the off-season, but for now I’ll just leave you with that. There’s no excuse for Bruce Sherman not to spend on at least mid-tier upgrades at those positions. We can even gets “cheap” 1 year DH power bat.

The one position that the Miami Marlins really need to focus on is SS. Miguel Rojas simply doesn’t cut it with the bat, though his elite dWAR makes me think that he might be a decent option as long as we heavily upgrade the rest of the lineup. Don’t forget that we have Jordan Groshans in the Minors for 3B or SS as well.

Next. Improvements we can realistically make. dark
