Miami Marlins division rivals are busy before the season starts, while The Fish are avoiding spending at every cost it seems. The Kansas City Royals outrighted a former top prospect to the Minor Leagues, and it makes sense for Peter Bendix to look into acquiring him for the team. He could be pretty useful for the team's hitting depth actually.
Nick Pratto could be an option for the Miami Marlins.
It would make sense for the Miami Marlins to pursue outrighted Kansas City Royals first baseman Nick Pratto. In Spring Training so far, Pratto batted .200/.351/.333, with a home run and 4 RBI in 15 games and 30 AB. The OBP really makes me curious about him, making me think tat with some adjustments he could potentially unlock some new level of production.
Pratto was the 14'th pick of the of the 2017 MLB Amateur Draft. Debuting with the Kansas City Royals in 2022, he batted .184/.271/.386, with 7 home runs and 20 RBI in 49 games and 158 AB. It wasn't good clearly, and he was worth a dreadful -0.3 WAR.
In the 2023 season, Nick Pratto batted .232/.307/.353, with 7 home runs and 35 RBI in 95 games and 306 AB. He was worth an even worse -1.3 WAR that season. It's obvious that these were hardly promising results, and he's also a very bad defender. His Exit Velocities weren't that great either, with him posting marks of 85.3 and 87.5 in the two seasons.
You might think that there's nothing really exciting about Pratto, but that OBP does interest me as previously mentioned. He also posted interesting numbers in the Minor Leagues. In 2022 in AAA, he batted .228/.369/.449, with 17 home runs and 47 RBI in 82 games and 303 AB. In 2024 in AAA, he batted .242/.324/.410, with 16 home runs, 61 RBI and 15 stolen bases that season.
The 26 year old is no longer as highly touted as he used to be. As a result, Nick Pratto could come cheap for the Miami Marlins in a trade. That's something for Peter Bendix to look into.
